Abstract
This paper is devoted to the scientific heritage of the historian and teacher Alexander Alekseevich Fortunatov (1884-1949), the representative of the Fortunatov dynasty, which has been poorly covered in historiography. Brief analysis of his pedagogical and research activities has been performed. The relevant facts of his biography have been reconstructed. The paper focuses on his research on the Carolingian Renaissance. The reasons for his interest in this problem and the characteristics of his works devoted to this problem have been given. The paper analyzes his views on the era of Charlemagne concerning a number of debatable problems (the validity of the term “Carolingian Renaissance”, the personality of Alcuin and his role in the development of the medieval school, the correlation of the ancient and early Christian heritage in the intellectual culture of the 8th – 9th centuries, the character of the relations of Charlemagne and Alcuin). The peculiarities of A.A. Fortunatov's method of scientific research have been discussed. It has been concluded that he succeeded in demonstrating the essence of the Carolingian Renaissance as attempts to synthesize the ancient education and Christian doctrines on the basis of careful study of the sources (Alcuin's correspondence, capitularies, textbooks, annals, etc.). Further research on the activity of the scientist is still urgent in modern science.
