The Department of World Cultural Heritage was reorganized from the Department of Museology, Cultural Studies and Tourism in 2016. The “Museology” major appeared in KFU in 2003. With the decision of the Academic Council of KFU and the order “On Changes in the Structure of the Historical Faculty”, the independent Department of Museology was established on February 12, 2007. Later on, the specialty was renamed into Museology and Protection of Cultural and Natural Heritage Sites. In 2011 the Department offered a Bachelor`s degree program in Cultural Science, and the Bachelor's program in International Tourism in 2014. . In the course of the university restructuring, the name was changed for the Department of World Cultural Heritage.
Since September 1, 2016, the Department of World Cultural Heritage is a part of the Higher School of Historical Sciences and World Cultural Heritage within the Institute of International Relations, History and Oriental Studies.
The academic staff includes 22 specialists including 4 Doctors of Science, 17 Candidates of Science.
The objective of the graduating Department of World Cultural Heritage is to perform educational, methodological and research activities in the field of museology, cultural science and tourism and to train qualified specialists in these areas. The role of the department within the system of higher education in Kazan Federal University is to deliver the course of Cultural Science to the students of all profiles of education.
The activity of the Department aims at:
educational, methodological and organizational support of academic disciplines;
introducing the future-oriented educational framework;
preservation and development of close ties with cultural institutions, museums, travel agencies in Kazan and the Republic of Tatarstan, constant communication with the university graduates;
increasing publication activity of the faculty in the leading foreign and Russian issues indexed in the foreign citation databases (Web of Science and Scopus);
involving the staff into the interdisciplinary research and educational projects in partnership with the leading foreign and Russian organizations;
inviting visiting Russian and foreign scholars to teach courses within the Master's programs.

In 2018-2019, the Department is offering a Bachelor's degree in Museology and Protection of Cultural and Natural Heritage Sites (profile: International and National Museum Management with the advanced curriculum in foreign languages) and a Master`s program in Cultural Science (profile: Management of Cultural and Natural Heritage).
