Gabdulla Tukay Higher School of National Culture and Education prepares students for bachelor’s, master’s and further degrees related to Tatar and other Turkic languages, the literature and cultural values of the Tatar and Turkic peoples, and bilingual education. Graduates are employed in the fields of higher, secondary, primary and early childhood education. They work in research organizations, centers for Turkic studies, government agencies, mass media, translation and tourist agencies, etc.
The academic staff of the Higher School actively conduct research in the fields of Tatar linguistics and literary criticism, Turkic-Tatar linguistic culturology, Turkology, cultural studies, art history and design. The faculty study questions related to onomastics, lexicography, linguistic methods, folkloric linguistics, regional literary studies, theatrical criticism, the folklore of Tatarstan and the Volga Region, and graphic design and publishing. The Higher School implements projects that contribute to the maintenance of native and heritage languages, including the Kayum Nasyri Institute, the International Tatar Language Testing Center, the online Tatar language school “Ana Tele”, and the “Emergency Linguistic Assistance” website.
Since 2013 the international academic journal Tatarica has been published in three languages: English, Tatar, and Russian. The aim of the journal is to provide a platform for international scholars, academicians and researchers to share the latest ideas in the fields of language, literature and arts. Issues of the journal are distributed among the leading academic libraries, universities and research centers of the world. In 2015, Tatarica entered the largest global EBSCO database, which makes it available to researchers from all over the world.
The faculty staff of the Higher School are members of the unions of writers, composers, artists, designers of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tatarstan. The outstanding alumni include the poet Musa Jalil, Hero of the Soviet Union, the winner of the Lenin Prize; the poet Yulduz Minnullina, the winner of the Russian-Italian Bella Ahmadullina Prize; the poet Lenar Shaehov, the laureate of Eurasian International Award for Contribution to 21st Century Literature; People's Artist of the Republic of Tatarstan Ramil Tukhvatullin; People's Artist of the Republic of Bashkortostan and the Republic of Tatarstan Aydar Galimov and others.
