The Olympiad started at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University on July 26th with the Opening and Closing Ceremonies being held at Zholdasbekov Student Hall.
The delegation representing our university, led by Rector Ilshat Gafurov, visited Almaty to adopt the practices of hosting the International Olympiad in Informatics and to discuss future cooperation in research and education with Kazakh institutions. Russia won the right to hold this prestigious contest with Kazan overcoming bidding cities from Japan and Azerbajian.
KFU's current partner-universities include Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, L. Gumilev Eurasian National University among others.
Over the course of the visit, the alma mater's representatives stopped by Almaty Management University where the prospect of mutual partnership was raised. Rector Gafurov also gave an interview to Kazakh TV channel Khabar.
At the closing ceremony of the Olympiad, the city of Kazan, in particular Kazan University, was presented in the official IOI 2016 promotional video and Ilshat Gafurov was handed the IOI flag. The Rector addressed the participants and guests noting the achievements of KFU.
The total amount of participating countries was 83 with 161 medals awarded (27 gold, 55 silver and 79 bronze). Russia claimed three gold medals and one silver.
