After finishing school Zavoisky decided to continue his studies at Kazan University. Before entering exams he was tutored mathematics by Aleksey A. Manturov.

"A teacher of Mathematics Manturov, a tall thin man, very strict in appearance, lived in the settlement Admiralteiskaya Sloboda. He prepared pupils for entering exams to university, and carefully chose persons interested for his group. 

- How much are 17 multiplied by 34? - He asked Zhenya. He seemed to like the quickness of giving the answer and Zhenya was admitted. Manturov made his pupils work a lot, and his help was quite useful".

According to results of entering exams on mathematics, physics, social science and literature, Yevgeny Zavoisky was admitted to Math Department at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Kazan State University. 
A shy young man of a few words Yevgeny Zavoisky took active part in scientific work of the university since his first year. He spent all his spare time studying textbooks and lecture material in the laboratory. In addition to the curriculum subjects he continued his radio-amateur work. Being a first-year student he entered the Circle of Physics and Mathematics.

If one consults the remained notes and copybooks of that time titled "Radiougolk" (Radio Room), one can come to conclusion that for that time Zhenya took a complete course of radio amateur. 
There are schemes of one- and two-valve detection receivers, regenerative receivers, low-frequency amplifier for detector receiver, power supply (constant current source) and crystadyne in his rough copies. There are calculations for induction coil, capacitance, antenna and advice how to build a transformer, resistor and even a radio tube.

Zhenya Zavoisky built a receiver and listened to radio stations of Moscow, Leningrad and other cities, assessed the quality of the receipt and experimented with receivers, changing their modes. By the end of the first year after the exams he got accustomed to the university traditions completely.
