Scientific interests

A. Deneka has significant experience in lung cancer research, he and his coauthors described mechanisms for regulating the growth and metastasis of NSCLC by MSI2 protein, as well as conducted successful preclinical studies of promising new class of drugs - conjugates of heat shock protein inhibitors and topoisomerase inhibitors - in the treatment of small cell lung cancer ( SCLC), disease, that is extremely refractory to the treatment. The area of particular interest of A. Deneka includes investigation of the mechanisms by which intracellular regulatory proteins - stem cell markers, translational regulators (such as the Musashi family proteins) and scaffolding proteins (Nedd9) regulate growth, metastasis and response of human cancer cells to targeted agents and chemotherapy. Studies are carried out using high-performance approaches (screening of siRNA libraries, phospho-proteomics). Recent work includes a functional analysis of complex signaling networks, the purpose of which is to understand the causes of metastasis of non-small cell lung cancer. In collaboration with Dr. E.A. Golemis from the Fox Chase Cancer Center, the team identified Musashi 2 protein (MSI2) as a marker, and its regulated epidermal growth factor (EGFR) as the molecular target of therapy for non-small cell lung cancer. The author continues to use a combination of laboratory, as well as translational and bioinformatics methods to develop combined targeted therapy for this disease.
