Goals are to institutionalize in the United States increased academic attention to the Volga-Kama region, one of the new federal zones under development in Russia; provide wider public exposure to its people, cultures, languages, and social and policy issues; develop institutional relations with the Kazan Federal (Volga Region University, the Institute of History in Honor of Sh. Mardjani at the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences, and the Russian Islamic University; create opportunities for the exchange of academic specialists and major public intellectuals, as well as advanced students; establish the exchange of scholarly resources between the Wells Library at IU and two key repositories in Kazan-the "Lobachevka" and the Tatarstan National Archive; and to inaugurate a variety of collaborative projects on historical themes relating to the history of the Tatars and Bashkirs and to that of Russia's regional presence.
