Projects

Research in our Open Lab during this year has been dedicated to translational medicine that aims to expedite the discovery of new diagnostic tools and treatments by using a multi-disciplinary, highly collaborative, "bench-to-bedside" approach. We are specialized in the field of thrombosis which is local coagulation or clotting of the blood in a part of the circulatory system. Thrombosis is one of the hottest problems in clinical medicine. When a thrombus is large enough to reduce the blood flow to a tissue, oxygen deprivation can lead to infarction or tissue death.

Master project and subprojects in 2016

Project 1: Prognosis and diagnosis of pre-thrombotic states and thrombosis in autoimmune diseases

Subprojects:

• prothrombotic changes in the fibrinogen/fibrin system in systemic lupus erythematosus;
• isolation and characterization of pathogenic antibodies form the blood of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus;
• analysis of cellular micrivesiculation as a pathogenic factor and a diagnostic test;
• the role of platelets and monocytes in thrombophilia associated with autoimmune diseases;
• assessment of the severity of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia based on the signs of platelet activation and apoptosis.

Project 2: Cellular composition of thrombi and impaired remodeling (contraction) of blood clots in thrombotic states

Subprojects:

• blood clot contraction in ischemic stroke;
• blood clot contraction in deep vein thrombosis of the lower extremities;
• effects of oral anticoagulants on the blood clot contraction and composition of thrombi;
• comparative characterization of the ultrastructure of venous and arterial thrombi.
