The department of Ancient history and the history of Middle Ages was founded in 1991 as the result of division of the department of general history, which was led by Dr. Hist., professor Shofman A.S. (1913-1993). The first head of the department was Dr. Hist., professor Zhigunin V.D. (1943-2001).
The subject matter of researches is: the study of Ancient history, particularly the period of Hellenism and the history of International relations in the ancient world (prof. Gabelko O.L., assoc. prof. Rung E.V.), the study of history of the Jewish (ass. lect. Griger M.V.), the study of history of Middle Ages, particularly the transition period from Ancient times to Middle Ages (assoc. prof. Bikeeva N.Yu.), the study of Russian and foreign ancient historiography and the historiography of Middle Ages (prof. Myagkov G.P., assoc. prof. Chiglintsev E.A., assoc. prof. Akhmadiev F.N., assoc. prof. Bikeeva N.Yu.); the study of history problems and the theory of culture (assoc. prof. Yunusova M.G., ass. lect. Shadrina N.A., ass. lect. Dusaeva E.M., ass. lect. Masalova O.A.), the study of reception of Ancient spiritual heritage in the culture of XIX-XX cent. (assoc. prof. Chiglintsev E.A.).
In 1966 the scientific seminar circle “Ancient Monday” was formed, that was established by professor Shofamn A.S, and that is active nowadays. The results of the work of this group constitute more than 50 Candidates of History, the great amount of whom work in various Science centres in Russia and FSU countries. Some of the graduates of this circle have defended their doctoral dissertations (Zhigunin V.D., Kascheev V.I., Talashova N.S., Gabelko O.L., Rung E.V.). All of them started their scientific work as students, post-graduates, assistant lecturers, and further as the leaders of young generation. Even nowadays students make reports during the meetings of “Ancient Monday”, take part in scientific conferences held in different cities and carry out archeological excavations. Many students have published works in the department editions.
