The division “Institute of Oriental Studies” was established in 2013 as the successor to the traditions of Oriental Philology of Kazan Imperial University existing in 1807-1855 where such outstanding scholars as Christian Frahn, A. Kazem-Bek, Gotvald, O.M. Kovalevsky, I. Berezin, N. Katanov made their scientific and educational contributions to the establishment and continuous development of Oriental studies.
In 1989, since the establishment of the division of Oriental Languages, a revival of Oriental Studies at Kazan University began. In 2000, on the basis of this division the Institute of Oriental Studies of Kazan University was established. In the XX century such outstanding professors as D. Tumasheva, M. Usmanov and A. Khalidov worked here.
