Practical experience:
Estimation of toxicity of fluid and solid samples by means of contact and elutriate bioassays and corresponding equipment using crustaceans, protozoa, higher plants, algae, and bacteria.
The experiments conducted and the results obtained:
A new microbial contact bioassay was developed (the strain was deposited and patent of the Russian Federation was obtained). Based on this method, a commercial toxicity kit was developed. The kits are now produced by a spin-out, where P. Galitskaya is one of the shareholders. By means of the microbial contact test described above and standardized methods based on plants, animals, and bacteria, eco-toxicity of wastes, soils, and new materials was estimated. It was demonstrated that the levels of eco-toxicity were not always clearly correlated with concentrations of pollutants or physical characteristics of the samples. It was also shown that solid-phase bioassays, in many cases, possessed higher sensitivity than their elutriate analogs.
