The History of Tatar literature department was founded at the beginning of 2011/2012 study year and based on two departments – the theory and history of Tatar literature department of Kazan State University and the department of methodology of teaching Tatar language and literature of Tatar State University of Humanities.
The early stage of the department of Theory and History of Tatar literature (former Kazan State University) was closely connected with the names of R. Hakimova, Ya.Agishev, H.Usmanov, I.Nurullin, N.Yuzeev and some other famous philologists. Every member of the department had a scientific degree. There were four doctors of philosophy and professors, one corresponding member of the Academy of Science of the Republic of Tatarstan, one laureate of Tatarstan National Grant, and four members of the writers’ society of Tatarstan. The main research area of the department was Tatar verbal art, its past and present, and its relations with the culture of other (especially eastern) nations. The department worked as a coordinator of similar departments from other universities and institutes. It had close scientific relations with The Institute of Language, Literature and Art by G. Ibragimov of the Academy of sciences of Tatarstan and several universities of Russia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Bashkortostan, etc. The department’s members participated in creating a 30-volume History of Turkish literature. Some of the department’s professors were members of the Council for doctoral dissertations. A literary and artistic association “Elluki” and a scientific student club worked at the department. The department’s members published tutorials, readers, different textbooks for schools, gymnasiums, specialized secondary and higher education institutions.
The activity of the department of methodology of teaching Tatar language and literature (former Tatar State University of Humanities) originated from the department of Tatar language and literature of Eastern-pedagogical institute, that was founded in 1925.
