The department of English Philology was originally founded as the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology of Kazan State University in 1997.
The department of English Philology is one of the leading departments in its field. It trains highly qualified specialists in English who share a common commitment to language and literary studies.
Students of the department are trained in Philology (specialisation 021700), Foreign philology: English language and literature (specialisation 021703), and Translation and Interpreting (specialisation 021714). The department offers a Master Course in English language (specialisation 031001). Students with the diploma of specialist or Master’s degree can continue their education on a post-graduate programme 10.02.20 – Comparative-historical, typological and contrastive linguistics.
Every year students of the department take an active part in students’ conferences and the best reports are published in scientific journals. Some of the undergraduates and post-graduates receive prestigious grants of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Tatarstan and DAAD, and get a Master’s degree in Germany, UK, USA, Spain and other countries.
Contracts with several foreign universities allow our students to receive training courses abroad and master their language. Currently, the department is working on a joint Master Course with the University of Bamberg, Germany (under the auspices of DAAD).
There are 12 teaching staff members; one member possesses the first doctoral degree (Doctor of Philology, or PhD) and the rest possess the second doctoral degree (Candidate of Philology).
A scientific school of comparative phraseology (Prof. E.F. Arsenteva) is an integral part of the department. The main research area of the department of English philology is comparative-historical, typological and comparative linguistics.
The teachers of the department regularly participate in international conferences. Several professors and associate professors of the department are members of EUROPHRAS (The European Society of Phraseology). In 2013 KFU will be the first university in Russia to host the EUROPHRAS conference; the department of English Philology will be its main organizer. The agreement signed with the University of Bamberg (Germany) on cooperation in education and research also shows the level of international recognition of the department.
