This article reveals the role of the avant-garde tendencies of the visual arts of Tatarstan in forming the adaptive defending "mechanisms" of culture in the contemporary era of globalization, when destructive tendencies are becoming more active in peoples' lives. The individual artistic examples of the Tatar avant-garde artists1 show how the contradictions of the era of globalization and modernization are reflected in the content and "language" of art. Much attention is paid to the social content of Tatar art. Empirical material has been systematized according to problem-thematic signs. The Tatar avant-garde is considered as a component of the "median culture".
