Research carried out in Institute of Philology and Intercultural Communication focuses on the following priority research areas:

• Language and culture in multiethnic and multicultural environment
• Clinical Linguistics/Neurolinguistics
• Mathematical and computational linguistics
• Modern educational technologies in the multicultural language environment
• Text Analytics

The institute preserves and develops traditions of philological Research schools that have gained international recognition. Groups of researchers work within 3 Research laboratories. Eight Research and Education Centers coordinate work related to the application of research results into the education.

The institute publishes two peer-reviewed research journals:

• Филология и культура. Philology and Culture (included in the list of primary peer-reviewed scholarly journals approved by the Higher Attestation Commission of the Russian Federation)
