A group of few existing minbars of 12th - first third of the 13th century demonstrates a peculiar development in woodwork style of Seljuk Anatolia. The minbar of Alaaddin Mosque in Konya, being an outstanding monument of 12th century, deserves a special place among them. In a well-developed structure and tectonic proportions of the pulpit, one can see a close link with the Syro-Palestinian tradition of woodcarving, which found a creative interpretation in the work of the master from Akhlat. Analysis of the ornamental repertoire, technical vocabulary and plastic treatment of the minbar, as compared with other contemporary samples from Anatolia, Syria and Egypt, reveals the features of carving style, as well as determines the place of the Konya minbar among pre-Mongol pulpits of the Middle East. |
