Epeirogenic tectonic motions were first recognized more than a century ago, and the terms ?epeirogeny? and ?epeirogenesis? are still used by modern geologists. A bibliographical survey demonstrates that their use increased after
2005, which may be explained by significant achievements in the development of the concept of dynamic topography.
However, a content analysis of the principal modern works shows that specialists address epeirogeny/epeirogenesis in
a new manner, and their views differ from those expressed earlier (including the ?classical? views). It is also evident
that the discussed terms are used as mere descriptive appelations, which is different to how the term ?orogeny? is understood presently. Although epeirogeny and epeirogenesis are often linked to the dynamic topography mechanisms, it
is impossible to judge them similar. |
