The article discusses the issues of forming the national identity of modern students
of the design specialty. One of the important periods in the formation of a full-fledged member of
society is the period of study, both in secondary and high school. The purpose of the study is to reveal the system of sociocultural identities of students of creative specialties, the main one among
which is national identity, as well as to identify practical techniques that are aimed at the formation
of national identity in the process of training student designers of various directions. Research
methods: theoretical methods, including analysis of scientific literature on the research topic, comparative cultural method – the results of research on this topic in various national regions of the
country were compared. As an empirical method, the test of M. Kuhn and T. McPartland “Who Am
I?” was used. Testing took place in 2022 at the Institute of Design and Spatial Arts of Kazan (Volga
Region) Federal University; a total of 21 2nd year students in the field of environmental design were
surveyed. Conclusions and recommendations. National identity occupies a significant place in the
system of sociocultural identities of students of creative specialties. National identity cannot be
considered only as identifying oneself with any ethnic community. This is a multifunctional system
that includes stereotypical components, storage and transmission of language, historical roots and
cultural heritage. Three components interact as part of national identity: 1) cognitive – understanding the fact of belonging to a particular ethnic group, 2) value – positive or negative perception of
the fact of belonging to a given ethnic group, 3) emotional – a feeling of pride in one's ethnic community, spiritual closeness with other members of a given community, a desire to continue the traditions of ancestors. As practical assignments, students in the “Environmental Design” direction
were asked to design small architectural forms for public spaces in the urban environment, and
students in the “Fashion Design” direction were asked to design modern costumes using national
motifs. The projects created by the students showed a deep understanding of the enormous influence
of national culture, the ability to use the rich cultural heritage collected by each nation in modern
products. The results of the study can be used in developing a fund of evaluation tools for work
programs, in developing topics for competitions, coursework and final qualifying papers, which can
contribute to the formation of respect and love for the native land.
