Annotation |
The education systems of the post-Soviet countries that were part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) have been influenced by a number of factors. The 30-years path of their development already in the status of independent states demonstrates a wide range of options for transforming the Soviet education model: from complete abandonment to the preservation of its basic principles. The goals of educational reforms were mainly related to the new political agenda and economic policies of each country. The investigation into these issues is a basis for comprehensive understanding of changes with respect to teacher education in the post-Soviet space. Therefore, this chapter discusses the complex historical processes of the USSR's development and collapse, including consideration of attempts to create some new interstate associations in parts of the region that have been undertaken since the early 1990s. Special attention is given to economic difficulties of the transition period and different models of market economy, realised with varying degrees of success in the former Soviet republics. The chapter examines in detail the departure from the former Soviet Union and the creation – or re-creation – of national identity in independent states, which significantly influenced their educational strategies. The final section of the chapter attempts to predict the prospects for the development of education systems in the post-Soviet space drawing on the foreign policy realities in the region and across the globe. |
