Annotation At the present stage, the theory of collocations is actively evolving in Russian linguistics with the definition of the collocation and its status in the lexical system being in the spotlight. Researchers also carry out comparative and contrastive analyses of collocations with a particular «base« (i.e. semantically main component) or collocations united by a common theme. This article focuses on studying adjectival collocations with such bases as “fire”, “water”, “earth” and “air” in Russian, English, German and Spanish (n=428) with the aim of discovering cases of isomorphism and non- isomorphism. Two types of inter-language equivalents have been revealed – full and partial. The ratio of full equivalents to partial equivalents across the languages varies; and it is dependent on the base of a collocation. Although 37% of the collocations are unique only to one language, the other 63% have equivalents across languages (from a pair of languages to all the four languages). Potentially international collocations with equivalents across all the four languages account for 23%. This study extends our understanding of inter-language collocational equivalence. The findings might be useful for educators interested in developing language learners' collocational competence.
