Annotation The historiography of the study and design of ventilation systems in Europe and Russia during the Industrial Revolution is considered. A comparative analysis of the design solutions of ventilation systems in the first exhibition buildings with metal and glass roofs - Joseph Paxton's exhibition pavilion for the Great Industrial Exhibition in London in 1851 and the Alexander III Museum of Fine Arts at Moscow University (now the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts) by Vladimir Shukhov in Moscow in 1898–1912 is carried out. The paper reflects on the use of glass in the form of roofing based on the analysis of the design features of the first large English greenhouses and pavilions for the 1896 All-Russian Industrial and Art Exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod by Vladimir Shukhov. Significant characteristics of glass roofing in modern buildings in the context of sustainable development are given.
