Annotation The paper considers various construction types of differentials that are used in the domestic and foreign motor industry. The importance of choosing the construction parameters of the differential depending on a number of factors is assessed. Such factors include criteria for the operational properties of the car, parameters of the natural and climatic environment and the support surface, indicators of the operational condition of the component and parts. The conditions of operation of the rolling stock of motor transport in temperate and Arctic climates, including in extreme conditions, are considered. The necessity of using a limited or full differential lock in difficult road conditions is taken into account. Based on the conducted research, it is proposed to use a methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of the differential, refined for real operating conditions. The article presents data from road tests of a truck, showing the need to take into account the influence of atmospheric air temperature on the performance and reliability of the differential. Conclusions are drawn about the appropriateness of choosing parameters and comparing design of the differential of different types according to the proposed methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of the design of the differential. The expediency of ensuring a rational operating mode of the differential during operation at low ambient temperatures has been confirmed.
