    Annotation This chapter presents a deep insight into foreign language learning and teaching; it analyzes the ongoing transformation of the methodology of teaching and learning foreign languages (FLT / FLL) and the changing needs, roles, skills and competencies of teach-ers in Russian universities. The evolution of the FLT / FLL paradigm spans from conventional methods to web-based technologies and takes place in the context of globalization, informatiza-tion and digitalization. Major disasters, including the COVID-19 pandemic, are also having impact on education systems around the world. This contribution was carried out in the frame-work of contextual, social, pedagogical, integrative and competency-based approaches. After introducing the history and variety of methods, the authors discuss methods and influencing factors, and also introduce the necessary first steps for establishing efficient digital methods in foreign language teaching and learning.
