Covid-19 has greatly affected the education system in different countries. The need to study for a long time in an exclusively distance or blended learning environment required changes in the structure and planning of various disciplines, including in the approach that integrates science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The use of mobile technologies in the study of STEM disciplines is effective in terms of concretizing content and presenting it to students in an interesting form. The conditions of the present day show the need to develop mobile applications for the complete or temporary replacement of full-time education. The purpose of the study is to analyze the impact of the changing learning environment due to COVID-19 on the assessment of mobile applications for learning STEM disciplines. The study presents the results of the surveys of teachers (n = 19, age 32-52 years) and students (n = 188, age 19-21 years) of Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University and Kazan Federal University. The participants evaluated the effectiveness of a mobile application designed to study STEM disciplines. The analysis of available mobile applications (3 apps intended for learning STEM-disciplines and 9 auxiliary niche applications) revealed their pros and cons: expanded student opportunities, the ability to study from the Russian Federation, the availability of a Russian-language version, appointment (for teachers or students). Due to the constant use of mobile devices by young people, the time frame for completing lessons and motivation to actually accomplish assignments (tasks related to engineering, solving problems in a notebook, taking notes, completing assignments on the device and in the notebook) are also important. The assessment of mobile applications in the context of distance and blended learning, in addition to the well-known criteria, is also characterized by the opportunity to obtain high quality education through a mobile application and complete tasks outside the digital space, screen time reduction, and accessibility. Learning based on a mobile application must be planned to encourage student thinking, the desire to obtain results, the involvement in the implementation of projects, the search for the information needed, memorization and the ability to use information and applications to solve real problems. The research results are applicable for improving educational applications in various disciplines. |
