Annotation The Internet and the World Wide Web (www) have fundamentally changed the practice of distance teaching and distance learning which has evolved over the past years. Today, online learning begins to really replace the full-time form of acquiring knowledge. Russian universities are actively introducing online courses designed to replace classes within the walls of educational institutions. Thousands of educational institutions have already adapted various forms of online education for their needs. Review and consideration of the sources and trends of modern online learning is an important step towards it. The authors base their research on the analysis and synthesis of Russian and international experience evolving main characteristics of modality types of e-learning, online-learning and distance learning. ICTs have the potential to facilitate collaboration, exchange and access to learning resources. MOOCs concept can be applied in the system of higher full-time and part-time education through the mechanisms of creating mixed forms that combine a face-to-face approach (usually in the form of tutoring), online lectures and practical classes.
