Relevance:
Kazan (Republic of Tatarstan, Russia) is a place for economic, cultural, sport events at an international level. For example, International Economic Summit “Russia-Islamic world”, International Forum “Kazan Digital Week”, International Rudolf Nureyev Ballet Festival and Chaliapin Opera Festival, etc. are held in Kazan every year. Kazan also traditionally ranks 7-8 in Russia as a city attractive for foreign tourists. During the period of worldwide events and the peak tourist season, the need for professional interpreters increases. It is relevant to implement innovations in English language training for the students of non-linguistic majors forming their own translation experience in professional sphere.
Methodology:
The method of analysis of papers to characterize the advantages of organizing language practice in the service sector as a language learning innovation for students of non-linguistic majors was used. An algorithm for involving students in translation work at international events was modeled. The method of observing the organization and procedure of students' language practice was used; interviews with students to collect feedback on the necessity and importance of language practice in the professional area were held. The opinions of students about language practice at specific international events and in the service sector and their attitude towards learning by doing and language learning innovations were generalized.
Results:
Theoretical background of the advantages of language practice at worldwide events in addition to traditional English classes for students of non-language majors was studied. Authors-developed procedure for involving students in language practice consists of motivational speech of the teacher; practicing the vocabulary of professional terms in the chosen service sector; communicative skill development; consecutive and simultaneous interpreting training. The excerpts from the students` spoken and written replies about a new form of learning English through their own experience in translation activity and communication are given. It is shown that the language practice of students at specialized international summits and forums (economics students) and in the service sector (students-managers of «Tourism and Service« major) develops both linguistic and professional competencies. |
