Annotation We are occupied with the comparative analysis of phraseological units with onomatopoeic components and transparent (or partially transferred, partially changed) inner form in the English and Russian languages. A set-phrase the meaning of which can be easily deduced from the meaning of its constituents, that is the meaning of the phrase may be said to be clearly motivated, is the subject of our investigation. Such phraseological units preserve the semantic content. For example, in English: drop by drop 'hardly, barely'; to cut the cackle 'to stop talking, chatting'; to burst like a bubble 'vanish into thin air'; to blow bubbles 'to fool around'; in Russian: наплевательское отношение 'not to care a damn'; хохотун напал на кого 'intense feeling or wish to laugh' (informal).
