Annotation Compared to other types of conflict, inter-ethnic conflicts are among the most protracted, intractable, bloody and have become the dominant form of violence. Inter- ethnic conflicts have become one of the global challenges of our time, causing political insta- bility, economic stagnation and humanitarian catastrophes; and people living in these coun- tries are developing a permanent sense of fear. As of 2005, only 20 States in the world were ethnically homogeneous, with national minorities constituting less than 5 per cent of the population. There were about 8,000 peoples and ethnicities in the world. Theoretically, eve- ryone could claim independence. The existence of a large number of ethnic groups in the countries, each pretending to be a titular nation, has created many hotbeds and conflicts on national and ethnic grounds: numerous separatist movements have emerged in favour of the territory's independence, including by armed means. The increase in the number of inter- ethnic conflicts, the risk of them spilling over into one State or region, as well as the dis- placement of large numbers of refugees in times of conflict that could cause economic hard- ship and humanitarian catastrophe in their host countries, Increasingly, they are of great concern to world public opinion. These factors make it necessary to study and understand the nature, patterns and development of ethnic tensions leading to conflict.
Keywords ethnic conflicts, ethnic tensions, cultural specificities, ethnic wars, ethnicity, ethnic conflicts, typology of conflicts, ethnic processes.
