Historically, Russia is the motherland for different nations speaking different languages, practicing different religions, differing in cultural authenticity and mentality. More than 180 nations inhabit the territory of the state. The Republic of Tatarstan is one of the subjects of the Russian Federation. The Republic of Tatarstan is also ethnically diverse. The main ethnic groups are the Tatars and the Russians (53.24% and 39.71% respectively). The Constitution of the Republic of Tatarstan stipulates Tatar and Russian as equal right state languages. In this context, on the territory of the Republic active bilingualism is witnessed, which affects the education sector as well.
In this article, we intend to demonstrate the results of the analysis of monitoring the Tatar language functioning among upper-grades pupils of the general-education schools of basic general education practicing education in Russian in the city of Kazan in conditions of active bilingualism.
These results make it possible to objectively evaluate the functioning of the Tatar language in the system of social communication of the Russian-speaking pupils of the general-education schools of Kazan, and, in our opinion, these results corroborate the bilingualism asymmetry in Kazan in favor of the Russian language. The level of using the Tatar language by Russian-speaking pupils of Kazan is limited to little practice. At the same time, they adequately master the theoretical basics of Tatar. The pupils possess knowledge on the origins of the Tatar culture, on the Tatar ethnic cultural values. The problem areas, revealed in this study, are to be taken into consideration in further work with children both in educational institutions and in families.
The results of the study will be useful for further monitoring the language situation, for linguistic and cultural research, for analyzing the interrelation of languages of different structures.
