Annotation The article considers military vocabulary as one of the effective language tools with which the manipulation of the readers' consciousness in the media is carried out. The material for the study was the publications of the beginning of 2020, dedicated to the worldwide spread of the new coronavirus COVID-19. It is noted that words and combinations of military subjects are often used by journalists in articles on coronavirus, including in their heading components. In this case, military vocabulary can act both in direct and figurative meanings. With its help, a tense atmosphere is whipped up, and the reader's feelings such as fear, alarm, anxiety are formed. At the same time, journalists use the emotional potential that military vocabulary has historically possessed in Russia – a country that has experienced many military conflicts and confrontations. We concluded that the use of military vocabulary in a manipulative function is not prohibited, but the internal principles of journalists should tell them whether a military word is really necessary or it is simply a tool of speculation by the feelings of readers. At the same time, readers, who are aware of the rich manipulative potential of military vocabulary, should strive to resist the manipulations created with its help.
