    Annotation At the turn of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries children's literature becomes an integral part of the overall literary process and reflects the changes taking place in the life of society. The concept of «children's literature» is complex and peculiar. This literature was separated for a long time from the «big» («general») and educational literature. Therefore, the fact of separating it into an independent field still causes negative assessments, and as a result, discussions are still taking place in connection with the problem of so-called «specificity» and «essence». There are also disputes about how to call it: «children's literature» or «literature for children». And so, the article is devoted to the definition of the essence of Tatar children's literature. The relevance of the research is to determine the role of socio-historical factors in the process of turning this literature into an independent field of verbal art.
