Annotation To date, one can observe a discrepancy between the academic traditions of the training of artists and the nature of development of contemporary art. The paradox consists in the fact that the main centers of art education, inculcating professional skills, do not create the conditions for the formation of a creative personality, who would be able to present fundamentally new concepts in art. In order to determine whether there is a link between the system of art education and the degree of recognition of the artist by the expert community, a content analysis of the foreign reference books on art has been conducted. The problem of assessing their significance as cultural values is reflected in the principles of the selection of authors and their works. Content analysis reveals that the most frequently mentioned are the works by ancient Russian masters, Theophanes Grek, Andrei Rublev; masters of realism I. Repin, V. Serov; the names of modernist artists – V. Kandinsky, K. Malevich, V. Tatlin, M. Larionov, N. Goncharova, E. Lisitsky, A. Rodchenko; artists who developed their personal style in Russia, and biography in other countries - A. Yavlensky, M. Verevkina, Ch. Soutine, M. Chagall, N. Gabo, A. Pevsner, A. Arkhipenko. After acquainting with their biographies, the authors found out that only two of them were constructivists — V. Tatlin and E. Lissitzky had an art school completed, but not an academic one. Moreover, all the most famous modernists were expelled or dropped out of art schools. From their own memories, they were formed and supported by the artistic environment of modernism. The problem consists in the imbalance between those who are being in demand in the visual arts of today and those who are being trained by the modern Russian system of art education. A number of divergences characterize the system of relations between contemporary art and the traditional system of art education – between the expectations of the students and the system of education, teachers' understanding of their tasks and the requirements of the expert community, criteria of estimation of a student and an artist. According to the authors, the function of school is not to answer the questions but to teach the future artist to put them both to himself and his audience
