The communicative approach of foreign language teaching involves both training active speech and understanding the laws of communication in a given language. The paper refers to the twin challenge faced by a teacher at work: on the one hand, he/she must teach students different types of speech activity, which means explanation of the laws of constructing and using communicative units, as well as training the ability to produce statements and reproduce collocations; on the other hand, the teacher should encourage students to use newly formed or reproduced speech units in full accordance with their linguistic and cultural status, and speech etiquette of native speakers. Disregard for traditions and communication rules of other culture representatives leads to culture shock that is a condition caused by the mismatch of cultures. Acquaintance with speech etiquette will certainly help international students to get out of culture shock faster or to avoid it. |
