    Annotation The purpose of this paper is to analyze whether open online courses (OOC), especially MOOCs (massive open online courses) and SPOCs (small private online courses) may support different learning needs and styles of Russian students, enrich university learning environment and the higher school's curriculum with alternative educational modes and models for better learning outcomes. The main result of the study is the design of the open online learning model that enhances the quality of university education in general and foreign language training in particular.
