    Annotation The need for the study is determined by the expanding global processes of integration, informatization and technologization that influence all spheres of our life including education. The public request to reform higher education in order to improve its quality is extremely important. The appropriate organization of distance education (DE) for university students seems to be the key answer to most of the emerging challenges. The purpose of this article is to clarify the conceptual apparatus and analyze whether DE may support different learning needs and styles of modern students, change university learning environment for the better, enable learners and teachers to create distance education platforms, massive open online courses (MOOCs) and virtual worlds to share ideas, links or materials. The main result of the study is the design of an effiient model of distance education that enhances the quality of university education in general and foreign language training in particular.
