dc.description.abstract |
Water loss represents one of most stressful conditions for living organisms. However, some organisms have an ability to survive full body desiccation and resume life cycle after water return. A larva of an African chironomid Polypedilum vanderplanki is the only one known insect with this ability. In response to desiccation, P. vanderplanki larva overexpress a large variety of protective proteins. We hypothesized that this desiccation-related upregulation of protective proteins is performed by some ordinary system of stress response. |
