This paper analyses the features of the ancient spiritual songs of the Muslim Tatars implemented in modern music. Quran recitation, book singing and folk songs gradually formed independent musical and poetic genres – munajat and bait. At the end of the 20th century, the spiritual traditions of the Muslim Tatars became the basis for new, European-type folk music patterns created by some Tatar composers. The subject of this analysis is the music of Tatar composer Shamil Sharifullin (1949–2007), having its roots in authentic Tatar folk music and poetry. The composer used the ancient musical and cultural traditions of the Muslim Tatars with scientific credibility based on his numerous folklore expeditions, published collections of folk songs, and methodological studies of Tatar folklore.
