Annotation The article presents the authors' taxonomy of the ways pragmatic norms of professional communities are verbalized through direct definitions, definitions by enumeration of senses, definitions of the domain of “the possible” and definitions of extension. The study is focused on the pragmatic norms and identity of a professional community verbalized in low register institutional discourse (intra-, inter-professional and professional-lay types). Based on a wide range of lexicographic data the authors prove that in their intra-professional communication professionals predominantly resort to indirect methods of nominating the pragmatic norms via dysphemisms and derision thus exemplifying themselves as representatives of high-context cultures. The norm competence is a key-factor in intra- and inter-professional contacts and if not decoded by the interlocutors becomes the reason for eliminating communication.
