Diffusion behavior of Brownian particles confned in porous solids is studied for the particle
displacements notably shorter than a characteristic pore size. Geometric confnements imposed
by the porous solid are described by a spatially-varying potential feld mimicking the pore space
organization. It is assumed that the potential is zero in the pore space, infnitely large within
the solid, and exhibit a smooth transition between them close to pore walls. The Smoluchowski
equation describing diffusion of tracer particles in the thus created external force feld is solved
under approximations allowing for a general analytical solution. The result obtained for the time-
depended diffusion coefficient is found to agree with that obtained earlier using the Fick's diffusion
equation [Mitra et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 68, 3555 (1992)], but with a different numerical constant.
Numerical analyses of the Smoluchovski equation performed with a selected interaction potential
