Ashes of astronomer Vasily Engelgardt back in Russia

Today, September 4, a coffin with the ashes of the outstanding astronomer Vasily Engelgardt arrived in Kazan from Drezden where at the old Holy Trinity Cemetery the scientist had been buried after his death in May 1915.   

Since early morning the Kazan University officials and representatives of the KFU Astronomical Observatory, founded by the prominent astronomer, were waiting at the airport for the plane to arrive.  Lenar Latypov, KFU Vice-Rector for Economic Affairs, Iskander Gilyazov, Head of the Department of Turkic Philology of the Institute of International Relations, History and Oriental Studies, and the customs offices carried the coffin out to be put into the hearse and taken to the Chapel of the Sviyazhsk Monastery.

The ashes of Vasily Engelgardt will be kept there till the panikhida and reburial ceremony on September 21 when the last will of the outstanding scientist to be buried in his native land will be fulfilled.
