KFU Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology and University of Pennsylvania Are Ready to Joint Research

Director of the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology (IFMB) Andrei Kiiasov who is on a business trip in USA as a member of KFU official delegation told that IFMB and University of Pennsylvania are ready to implement joint research projects.

On March, 28 A. Kiiasov met with Dr. John Gearhart, Director of the Penn Institute for Regenerative Medicine. Dr. Gearhart’s research is directed at human reproductive technologies, embryonic development, embryo and germ cell manipulations, and the genetic engineering of cells. A. Kiiasov and J. Gearhart discussed possible joint projects in the area of new technologies in regeneration during the meeting. This refers to new transformation ways of one type of cells into another one under the influence of specific transcription factors.

Dr. Gearhart agreed to take part in International panel conference “Postgenom” which is to be held at Kazan Federal University in October, 2014.

A.Kiiasov also met with Dr. John W.Weisel, Professor in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology. His research interests include the molecular and cellular mechanisms of blood coagulation, fibrinolysis, etc. Dr. Weisel works with Senior Research Investigator Rustem Litvinov, who is also KFU Visiting Professor. They demonstrated laser tweezers instruments used for understanding of intermolecular interaction at the level of separate molecules. This setting provides unique information about the mechanisms of protein-protein interactions which are basic for many biological processes such as blood coagulation, hemorrhage, thrombosis.

A. Kiiasov took an interest in setting up the similar laser tweezers instruments in IFMB which would be the first in Russia.

He also engaged in talks with Dr. Morris Birnbaum, Associate Dean for Research core facilities at the Perelman School of Medicine.

University of Pennsylvania is an American private Ivy League research university located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1740 by Benjamin Franklin.

University of Pennsylvania is ranked 16th by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings in 2013-2014; 13th by QS World University Rankings in 2013-2014; the 1st by the Ivy League ranking in 2012.

Total University budget for fiscal year 2014 is $6.6 Billion.

University of Pennsylvania has 100 research centers and institutes with a research budget of $923 million.

Average annual tuition fee in 2013-2014 is $46, 000. The average room and board fees are about $13, 000.

Established in 2007, the Penn Institute for Regenerative Medicine was formed to promote basic discoveries in stem cell biology and regeneration, and to translate those discoveries into new therapies. Researchers at the IRM seek an understanding of how cells and tissues are formed as well as how they can be repaired or replaces when damaged or lost due to injury, disease or aging.
