What is a social face of Kazan?

In which direction our city will develop – that is the question/this question is interesting for many journalists, sociologists, political analysis. The Institute for Comparative Studies of Modernity devotes special attention to this problem – now we are implementing the project “Social Consequences of Mega-Events: by the example of the Universiade and Olympic Games in Sochi”, and soon we shall familiarize readers with the results of these studies. For now, we are happy to offer you the essay of our colleague from the University of Bangor, Great Britain, the honorary professor of KFU, who knows Kazan for about twenty years already – Howard Davis. How does Kazan appear from Europe? What is especially attractive in this city?

What is a social face of Kazan?

For the guest from the Western Europe Kazan is full of an exotic interest. A collision of symbols of history, new modern styles and not entirely European culture is dramatic and surprising…

However, Kazan is still not as widely known at the international level as it deserves. A popular western opinion is that any locality bearing such a name as Tatarstan ending with “-stan” is considered Asian, not European, and Oriental, not Occidental…
