XXVII World Summer Universiade closes

The 2013 Summer Universiade closing ceremony was held on July, 17.

The event started with a speech of Prime-Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev. He expressed his gratitude to all the athletes, coaches, volunteers, fans, organizers of the Universiade, Kazan citizens and called the Student Games “the worthy prelude” to the Olympic Games in Sochi.

The next Universiade is hosted by Gwangju (Republic of Korea) in 2015.

Let us remind that the XXVII World Summer Universiade kicked off on July, 5 and came to an end on July, 17. 351 sets of medals in 27 sports were distributed during the Universiade which was attended by athletes from 162 countries.

The Russian delegation did a major haul of the medal chest topping the medal’s table with 292 medals (155 gold, 75 silver & 62 bronze).

Students and graduates of Kazan Federal University contributed 10 medals (4 gold medals, 1 silver and 5 bronze) to the victory of the Russian delegation. The most medalists study at the Institute of Physical Education, Sport and Restorative Medicine.

A 5-year student Ildar Giniyatullin won gold in belt wrestling (classic style) in men’s 70 kg. Graduate Yulia Zaripova is the winner in women’s 3000 m steeplechase. The best result was shown by Russian team which included freshman Radel Kashefrazov in 4x400 relay.

Graduate student Yana Martynova was the first in 400m women’s medley, later she got bronze in 200 m women’s butterfly. A 4-year student Antonina Savelyeva took 2 bronze medals in table tennis (team scoring and mixt). The bronze medalist in judo is Maria Shekerova in women’s 78 kg.

Faculty of law may be proud of its students-weightlifters. Dmitry Khomyakov, a 3-year student, is a bronze medalist in men’s 77 kg. Andrey Demanov, KFU graduate, won silver in men’s 105 kg.
