Associated petroleum gas and its proper utilization has always been a serious challenge for scientists.

A new technology offered by Kazan Federal University pertains to hydrates.

“The technology helps preserve associated petroleum gas. This, in turn, leads to decrease environmental burden and greenhouse effect,” explains Mikhail Varfolomeev, Head of EcoOil Research Unit and Lead Research Associate of the World-Level Research Center in Liquid Hydrocarbons.

The technology’s gist is adding a promotor to a catalyst, which leads to better efficiency of the conversion of associated gas. The promotor is based on castor oil.

“By working on such reagents we can learn to direct the processes of formation and dissolution of gas hydrates. This brings us closer to better utilizing associated petroleum gas,” adds Chief Research Associate Roman Paveliev.

The promotor has so far proven to be more efficient than existing competitors.
