Head of Rossotrudnichestvo Yevgeny Primakov visited Kazan Federal University

The delegation arrived on 3 February.

Rossotrudnichestvo, fully titled Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States Affairs, Compatriots Living Abroad, and International Humanitarian Cooperation, is well-known to all current and prospective international students. The agency is responsible for disbursing government scholarships for international students in Russia.

Apart from Yevgeny Primakov and Rector Ilshat Gafurov, the meeting featured Vice-Premier of Tatarstan Vasil Shaikhraziev, Head of Rossotrudnichestvo Office in Azerbaijan Irek Zinnurov, Head of the Department of Education and Science of Rossotrudnichestvo Olga Filonova, Vice-Rector of KFU for International Cooperation Timirkhan Alishev, and Vice-Rector for Research Danis Nurgaliev.

Rector Gafurov spoke about KFU’s infrastructure, global positioning, priority areas, and ongoing cooperation with Rossotrudnichestvo. In particular, thanks to the Uni’s proactive efforts in promoting overseas in tandem with Rossotrudnichestvo, it placed third – after Saint-Petersburg State University and RUDN University – in the number of overseas enrolment applications in 2020. At this moment, KFU has 874 students enrolled through Rossotrudnichestvo tuition scholarship programs.

Vice-Rector Alishev then covered the issues of promoting Russian and Tatar languages abroad. He suggested opening a network of preparatory schools based at Russian Science and Culture Centers in other countries.

The sides discussed possible improvements for the admission process. In particular, some leading universities may be given the right to organize the full process themselves based on pre-distributed enrolment quotas. Furthermore, more emphasis will be put on attracting people to postgraduate programs, double degree programs, and advanced training programs.

Mr. Primakov gave high praise to KFU’s educational and scientific capabilities. He was also interested in the experience of the Higher School of Journalism in providing training sessions for media professionals from CIS countries.

In conclusion, Primakov met with international students and answered their questions.
