Chief Medical Officer urges flu vaccination, warns COVID and flu combination may be fatal

Head of the University Clinic Sergey Osipov held a livestream on vaccination on 10th September.

Starting the conversation, Dr. Osipov said that it’s especially important to take a flu vaccine this year. If flu is combined with COVID-19, the prognosis will really not be good.

“The intertwining of two infections will most probably be fatal,” he warned.

This year, the Government and the Ministry of Healthcare of Russia want to vaccinate 60% of the population from flu. “Vaccines, no matter from which infection, stimulate nonspecific immunity,” added Osipov.

At this time, there is ample scientific evidence that vaccination strengthens antibody-mediated immunity, which works against gram-negative bacteria. Such bacteria can cause atypical pneumonias, which are often deadly dangerous. Patients who have been vaccinated from flu generally have lighter symptoms of COVID.

The vaccination campaign at KFU started on 30th August and is scheduled to close on 20th November, but the Chief Medical Officer strongly advised to do this promptly. Immunity needs about two weeks to fully recuperate from vaccination and meet aggressive environmental factors in full armor.

All public medical institutions offer such vaccines free of charge. Some mobile vaccination chambers have also been deployed near transport junctions with heavy foot traffic. Naturally, the University Clinic also dispatches out-of-house vaccination posts to various University facilities.
