Rector Ilshat Gafurov held talks with Russia's Commissioner for Human Rights Tatiana Moskalkova

She visited KFU to give a lecture on the Commissioner’s status and powers on 7th September.

In his greeting, Rector Gafurov noted that the world is going through a period of serious change, including those in the legal field. In particular, KFU has the Center for Human Rights, International Law and Integration Problems which tackles such issues, and has been offering a postgraduate program in international human rights protection since 2013. The alumni of this course work in various institutions, including the UN Human Rights Commissioner’s Office.

Moskalkova spoke about her work and the petitions that she usually receives. Since 2016, she has worked on 3,700 applications. She also spoke about her efforts in international cooperation, legal initiatives, and legal education. She invited to partake in an upcoming conference on innovative techniques of legal education.

After answering the audience’s questions, she proceeded to meet with Rector Gafurov.

He emphasized that KFU’s Faculty of Law and other institutes combine talent to provide education and consultations in international public and private law, integration law (including that of the European Union and the Eurasian Union), and human rights protection.

“It’s very important for us to cooperate with the Commissioner for Human Rights. A multifaceted set of issues regarding human rights has always been held in high pertinence by us, and we want to discuss potential points of mutual interest,” he noted.

The University wants to involve its Center for Human Rights in the Commissioner’s activities in such areas as international human rights standards, mechanisms of human rights protection, labor rights, rights of foreign citizens, migrants and refugees.

In other proposals, there is a possibility to give advanced training to human rights workers in conflict studies and negotiation tactics. Students may also soon find opportunities to intern at the Commissioner’s Office.

KFU also offered to partake in human rights monitoring in Tatarstan and Volga Federal District.
