The award will be given for outstanding achievements in organic chemistry.
Vladimir Markovnikov (1838 - 1904) is a prominent representative of the Kazan school of chemistry, student of Alexander Butlerov and creator of the eponymous Markovnikov's rule.
“The idea to establish this prize took final shape during the International Markovnikov Congress at Kazan Federal University in 2019,” explains Igor Antipin, Chair of the Department of Organic Chemistry of Kazan Federal University. “The Congress comprised 11 plenary speeches, 33 keynotes and 49 invited lecturers, 60 oral reports, 40 reports by young scientists, and 275 poster presentations by contributors from 36 countries. Among Western chemists, Markovnikov is no less known than his teacher Butlerov, the one who Markovnikov himself deeply admired and whose ideas he used to spread around the world.”
The success of the Markovnikov Congress was the final push for the interested parties to make a decision to inaugurate the prize. It was fully supported by Rector of Kazan Federal University Ilshat Gafurov.
According to the executive order signed by President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, the right to nominate candidates is given to government entities, Russian and overseas scientific organizations, universities, and other organizations.
The nomination includes a formal decision by the nominating entity and a brief summary of the candidate's contribution (no specific format required).
The deadline for 2020 submissions is 1st September 2020.
