Rector Ilshat Gafurov partook in a conference dedicated to the 600th anniversary of Samarkand University

The online forum “Samarkand State University as a descendant of Ulugh Beg Madrasah” took place on 16th July.

In his greeting, Rector Gafurov noted, “Traditions of science and education in Central Asia are known around the world and have deep roots.” He went on to give credit to Mirza Ulugh Beg (1394 - 1449), famous Uzbek statesman and astronomer.

The Rector emphasized that Central Asia, and Uzbekistan in particular, is a priority region for international cooperation for Kazan Federal University. 29 agreements have been signed between KFU and Uzbekistani universities, and 2,750 Uzbekistani nationals currently study at our university.

Touching on the existing complex circumstances, Dr. Gafurov mentioned the importance of distance education, webinars, online entrance exams and applications, and online lectures offered by KFU to partners in Uzbekistan.

“Samarkand with its ancient cultural traditions is one of our priorities. Our cooperation develops rapidly in a spectrum of areas,” he said.

KFU is the home to the Institute of Central Asian Research, an entity dedicated specifically to studying the crucially important region. Another important prospect is the International Silk Road initiative involving Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Mongolia, China, and Kyrgyzstan.

Coincidentally, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced that the year 2020 is the Year of Science, Enlightenment and Digital Economy in Uzbekistan.

“The circumstances of the pandemic once again prove the importance of introducing digital tech in education. We know that Uzbekistan tasks itself with expanding educational capacity for IT aspirants. I am sure that digital technology education and research can be a new platform for our joint breakthrough projects,” concluded Dr. Gafurov.
