A government decree was published on 9^th April 2020.

Ilshat Gafurov has served as Rector of Kazan Federal University since 2010. He was re-appointed by the then Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in 2015. According to the existing Russian legislation, rectors of federal universities are appointed by the Government of Russia.
